FAITH Erie ER CSA : Page 2
2 We meet the Lord in our parishes Most Rev. Donald W. Trautman is bishop of the Diocese of Erie and publisher of FAITHErie A lthough it is increasingly important that we embrace our Catholic faith in its broad context, as a faith that reaches beyond the borders of our local parish, it is clearly at the parish level that we encounter Christ through the Scriptures and through the sacraments. This is where the rubber meets the road; it is at the parish level that we are ministered to and where we meet the Lord. That is one reason I am pleased this special Catholic Services Appeal edi- tion of FAITH magazine is focused on the many ways CSA dollars have been spent over the years to build up our parish communities. Yes, the main goal of this campaign is to support the vital outreach efforts we have established together as church; you can see them listed on the opposite page. And I hope you appreciate how the sacrifices you make heal and strengthen and bring hope to those in need. But it is also good that when a par- ish surpasses its CSA goal, additional dollars raised are used to build up the parish community. I think you will be surprised and inspired by the creative and resourceful ways parishes across our large diocese are doing just that. When people ask me what my priorities are as bishop, I invite them to look at where priest personnel are working and to look at how our dioc- esan dollars are spent. (You will find our budget chart on page 12.) But a pastor can say the same thing. If you want to understand the pri- orities of a parish, look at where the priest and personnel are and consider how the budget is being spent, be it on the school, for religious education, for outreach, etc. Usually those goal are set by the pastor with the parish council, and the more transparent we can be about it, the better. Each area of our diocese has a different personality, and we have to recognize there are also different needs in each region. We are cultur- ally conditioned by our geography — metro, suburban, rural or inner city. But we are able to recognize the mystical body of Christ in each area. The basic job description of ev- ery parish community is to teach, to sanctify and to shepherd. We teach the truths that Christ revealed, we sanctify through the sacraments and Scrip- tures and we shepherd God’s people and reach out to them. This requires funding, and the CSA at the parish level enables the local community to do what it is called to do. While one parish may run a soup kitchen and another commits to a summer program for young people, we are truly of one heart and mind, reaching out, neigh- bor to neighbor. When I travel across the diocese, I am always grateful for the faith and good- ness of Almighty God and for the faith Dr. David Dieteman and his wife, Anna, have been faithful stewards of the Catholic Services Appeal. and goodness of the people. I am grate- ful to my priests for all they do to build up the faith communities and grateful to the many parishioners who quietly give of their time, their talent and their treasure to enrich their communities. In reading St. Paul’s letters, we see he recognized how each church had different needs and different person- alities. He loved them all and praised them for their different contributions. But he always went back to something we need to keep uppermost in our minds today, as well: we are one in Christ Jesus. God bless you for all you do and may God inspire you as you prayer- fully consider your gift to the 2010 Catholic Services Appeal.
