They’re the now of the church,” FAITH’s Father Joe Krupp recently told the Knights of Columbus magazineColumbia in its April 2010 Year for Priests-themed story “Being Present: A priest ministers to young people in simple, enthusiastic ways.” “We need their energy; we need their utter craziness; we need their absolute, jaw-dropping compassion. We need that so badly, and they’ve got it in spades. That’s their role in the church right now.” Can I get an, “Amen”? That sound bite of wisdom could not be more spot-on. (That must be why Father Joe is so in the know.) In this issue of FAITH, you will meet the winner of the 2010 essay contest: Aerin Browning. You also will come across an utterly crazy message from a local parish youth minister, as Andy Troiano participates in a FAITH What do I know?Q&A. Bishop Cistone steals the show at Charity Ball with guitar solo of a 1960s country music hit During an unscripted moment at the 2010 Bishop’s Charity Ball, Bishop Joseph R. Cistone treated guests with his vocal talents as he sang the1964 No. 1 country hit “Saginaw, Michigan.” The surprise performance came at a time usually reserved for the evening’s first dance, which in past years has been led by the bishop of Saginaw as one of the event’s silent auction items. “Dancing isn’t necessarily my ‘cup of tea,’” Bishop Cistone told the crowd before strapping his guitar over his shoulder. “So I thought what I would do is share what little talent I have.” He said the classic country hit was first shared with him following his appointment as the sixth bishop of Saginaw in May 2009. While the 2010 Charity Ball was Bishop Cistone’s first, the event has raised more than $1 million for the Diocese of Saginaw’s Catholic schools and parish religious education and faith formation programs since its debut in 2007. “Saginaw, Michigan” was country musician Lefty Frizzell’s sixth and final No. 1 on the U.S. country chart. The song spent a total of 23 weeks on the country chart and peaked at No. 85 on the Billboard Hot 100. And then there are the Kreiner sisters, who have an contagious energy forhigher education.Joanna and Elisa share many treasures of knowledge from their under-graduate experience at a Catholic college. During a general audience earlier this year, Pope Benedict XVI told young people that the youth of the church give him “consolation and hope.” If you have been privileged to know firsthand how Jesus Christ is living in this world through the hands, feet, hearts and voices of our young church, then you know the reality of the Holy Father’s “consolation and hope.” We are indeed blessed by the FAITH of our youth. While Saginaw, Michiganearned Frizzell a Grammy nomination, it earned Bishop Cistone a big round of applause and a lot of laughs.
